The glacier valley walk

A flat half-hour walk up a riverbed of grey boulders, between cliffs that pour waterfalls, to a view of the glacier at the head of the valley. It is free, and it is the first thing to do in Franz Josef.

The Department of Conservation track to Franz Josef Glacier, Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere, is the walk almost every visitor does. It is short, close to town, and open all year unless the river or the cliffs say otherwise. It does not reach the ice: the viewpoint is about 3 km from the glacier face, and the Waiho River blocks the valley beyond it.

Around it sit half a dozen shorter and longer walks, a cycle path from the village, and since December 2025 a paid car park. Here is how it all fits together.

The quick answer

The Franz Josef Glacier walk is 1.7 km return and takes about 30 minutes, from the car park at the end of Glacier Access Road, about 4 km from the village. It is free; parking costs NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 a day, card only. Walk or cycle Te Ara a Waiau from the village to skip the fee. Add Sentinel Rock (20 min) and Peters Pool (25 min) from the same car park. A guided valley walk ($67) adds off-track trails but reaches the same viewpoint.

Can you walk to Franz Josef Glacier for free?

Yes, to the viewpoint. The DOC track is free and open to everyone; only the car park charges.

From the village, drive, walk or cycle south across the Waiho River bridge and turn left onto Glacier Access Road. The car park is at the end, about 4 km from town, with the trailheads for every walk in this guide (DOC).

The track crosses the old riverbed, mostly rough gravel, then ends at a fenced viewing area. Waterfalls drop off both valley walls. On a clear day the glacier sits white and blue between the peaks at the far end. You won't get closer. Our can you walk on the glacier guide explains why.

How long is the Franz Josef Glacier walk?

1.7 km return, about 30 minutes, on a mostly flat track. Every walk from the glacier car park, with DOC times:

How do you get to the glacier car park without a car?

Walk or cycle Te Ara a Waiau, the shared path from the south end of the village. It is 8.7 km return, about 2 hours on foot or 1 hour by bike.

Pick up the path on the right side of the road at the south end of the village, before the Waiho River bridge, then go under the bridge (Glacier Country). It runs along a sealed lane beside Glacier Access Road for about 1.7 km, then turns into rainforest through the Rata Grove and climbs gently to the car park.

Cyclists leave their bikes at the rack at the end. No bikes are allowed on the other tracks. It is the nicest way in: the forest is full of birdsong and you pay no parking.

How much is parking at Franz Josef Glacier?

NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 a day, paid by card at the machines. Since 1 September 2026 only the first 10 minutes are free.

DOC started charging at the glacier car park in December 2025 as a pilot, then kept the fee after reviewing it in July 2026. The current rules, from DOC's paid car parks page:

  • Half an hour: NZ$2.50. The 30-minute glacier walk plus Sentinel Rock comes to about NZ$5.
  • Day: NZ$20, with unlimited exits and re-entry that day.
  • Free period: 10 minutes, down from 20 during the pilot. Enough for a drop-off, not a walk.
  • Payment: debit or credit card at the machines. No cash.
  • Permits: NZ$10 one-off for residents of Westland, Grey and Buller; NZ$60 a year for one vehicle at one site. Online only, not at the machine.

More on the change in the parking fees post.

What other walks start at the glacier car park?

Sentinel Rock and Peters Pool are short and worth adding. The Douglas Walk links them in a loop. Roberts Point is a serious half-day hike.

Sentinel Rock is a 20-minute climb to a platform on a rocky knoll above the riverbed. You look straight up the valley and down onto the river. Peters Pool is a kettle lake, left behind when a block of buried ice melted. On a still morning it reflects the peaks and the glacier, and it is the best photo of the day.

The Douglas Walk is DOC's family loop: through forest on ground the glacier left between about 1600 and 1750, past Peters Pool, and across the historic Douglas Bridge, a suspension bridge over the Waiho. The Roberts Point Track is the long one: about 5 hours, rough, for fit walkers in good weather.

When is the Franz Josef Glacier walk closed?

After heavy rain, floods, rockfall or landslides. DOC closes the track and sometimes the access road; check the daily glacier access update before you drive out.

This valley gets several metres of rain a year, and the river can rise fast. DOC says the track and access road can close for flooding, rockfall or landslides, and points to the daily glacier access update on the Glacier Country Tourism site. The staff at the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre on the main road know the morning's state.

Never cross a closure barrier or wade the Waiho. If the track is shut, the valley views from Sentinel Rock or the Te Ara a Waiau path are often still open. For this season's track news, see which glacier walks are open this summer.

What is the best time of day for the valley walk?

Early morning. Cloud tends to build over the peaks as the day goes on.

Go before 9am if you can. Peters Pool is more often glassy before the wind gets up, and the peaks are more often clear. Late afternoon is the second choice.

Don't skip it in the rain. Every waterfall in the valley runs harder after a downpour, and the glacier may still show in the gaps between showers. Bring a rain jacket and shoes with grip; what to wear has a short list for the free walks, sandfly repellent included.

Morning mist often lifts by mid-morning. Cloud on the peaks often doesn't.

Is the guided Franz Josef valley walk worth it?

Yes, if you want the forest explained and trails you can't walk alone. Not if you only want the glacier view: it reaches the same viewpoint as the free track.

The guided valley walk with Glacier Valley Eco Tours costs $67 on Viator (NZ$115 adult direct), leaves 20 Main Road at 9:30 and is back by 12:30. About half is on the public track, half on trails only a guide may use: through rainforest, past Peters Pool and down onto the riverbed. Groups are 10 at most. Rain jackets, umbrellas, poles and boots are lent free, and the guide brews a hot drink on the way.

Guests like it for the guiding. One wrote that they "Went on paths only a guide is allowed to go" and had "good views of the glacier but it was quite a long way off." Another, on a rainy morning: "Despite cloud cover meaning that we didn't catch a glimpse of the glacier, we found it a great way to spend the morning." That is the deal.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Franz Josef Glacier walk free?

Yes. The DOC track is free. Parking at the glacier car park costs NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 a day, by card; walk or cycle in on Te Ara a Waiau to avoid it.

How close does the valley walk get to the glacier?

The viewing area is about 3 km from the terminal face. The Waiho River cuts off the valley beyond it, so there is no way further on foot.

Can you do the Franz Josef Glacier walk in the rain?

Yes, if DOC has not closed it. The waterfalls are at their best after rain. Check the daily glacier access update first, since heavy rain can close the track and the road.

Is the walk suitable for children and older walkers?

Yes. It is short and mostly flat, on gravel with a few uneven spots. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or most strollers.
