Franz Josef parking fees

Since December 2025 the car park at the end of Glacier Access Road charges by the half hour. DOC has made it permanent. Here is what it costs and how to avoid paying at all.

Paid parking at the Franz Josef Glacier car park began as a pilot in December 2025, one of three DOC sites to try it. In mid 2026 DOC decided to keep it, and on 1 September 2026 the rules changed again: shorter free period, cheaper short stays.

Everything below comes from DOC's own pages and its published decision report, checked on 22 October 2026.

The quick answer

Parking at the Franz Josef Glacier car park costs NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 for the day. The first 10 minutes are free (20 minutes until 1 September 2026). You pay by card at the machines, cameras read your plate, and overstaying can bring a NZ$75 breach notice. Locals in Buller, Grey and Westland pay NZ$10 for an annual permit, anyone else NZ$60. Walk or cycle Te Ara a Waiau from the village and you pay nothing.

How much does it cost to park at Franz Josef Glacier?

NZ$2.50 per half hour, capped at NZ$20 for the day. The first 10 minutes are free, for drop-offs and pick-ups only.

DOC's paid car parking page sets the rates: $2.50 per half hour or $20 a day with unlimited entries and exits that day. During the pilot you paid by the hour (NZ$5) after 20 free minutes. Since mid 2026 you can pay in half hours, and from 1 September 2026 the free period dropped to 10 minutes because, in DOC's words, people were rushing around the walks to beat the clock.

The day rate wins after four hours, so anyone heading up Roberts Point should buy it straight away. Here is what typical visits cost, using the walk times on the DOC track pages:

How do you pay for parking at the glacier car park?

At the machines in the car park, by debit or credit card. No cash, and no app. Pay on arrival or before you drive out.

Payment machines stand in plain view, and DOC is clear that cash is not accepted. If you stay longer than planned, extend at the machine in half-hour steps before you leave. Cameras record every number plate on the way in and out, and the parking contractor posts a breach notice to the vehicle's owner if the time does not add up.

That notice is NZ$75. With a rental car or campervan, the notice goes to the hire company, which passes it on to you. It happens more than you might think: DOC's decision report counts 10,253 breach notices across the three pilot sites from 5 January to 30 April 2026, about 8% of all parking sessions, and records visitors' shock at the size of the fee. Pay for longer than you think you need. NZ$2.50 is cheap insurance.

Who gets an annual parking permit, and who is exempt?

Residents of Buller, Grey and Westland pay NZ$10 for a local permit; anyone else can buy a NZ$60 annual permit. Tour operators with a DOC concession can apply for an exemption.

Permits are sold online only, not at the machines, and work off your number plate. DOC's July 2026 update improved the local one: it now covers two vehicles, one permit works at both Franz Josef and Punakaiki, and renewal is free, so the NZ$10 is a one-off.

The NZ$60 permit is for regular visitors from further away, one vehicle. For a holidaymaker it rarely pays: you would need three full days at the glacier car park to break even. No permit lets you camp overnight in the car park.

Why does DOC charge for parking, and is it staying?

It is staying. DOC kept paid parking at all three pilot sites after the pilot met its revenue goals without cutting visitor numbers.

The three sites are the Franz Josef Glacier car park, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks in Paparoa National Park and White Horse Hill in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, where the day rate is NZ$25. According to DOC's paid parking programme page, the setup was funded with NZ$3.8 million from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, the NZ$100 levy most international visitors pay with their visa or NZeTA. Yes, that means you have paid towards the machines you are now feeding.

The numbers explain why it stays. To 31 May 2026 Franz Josef took NZ$375,783 (excluding GST) from 43,448 parking sessions, and vehicle counts on the access road were about 3% up on the year before. In DOC's on-site survey, 26.7% of Franz Josef visitors said the price changed how long they stayed, mostly shorter. DOC is now investigating paid parking at other busy car parks from 2027, and the smaller car park on the valley road may become paid too.

How can you avoid the Franz Josef Glacier parking fee?

Leave the car in the village. Walk or cycle Te Ara a Waiau to the car park, or book a trip that starts in town.

Te Ara a Waiau starts on SH6 outside the national park visitor centre at the south end of the village, just before the Waiho River bridge. It runs 8.7 km return, about 2 hours on foot or an hour by bike, first on a marked lane beside Glacier Access Road, then through rainforest. Bikes go in the rack at the end; no other track here allows them. Add the 30-minute valley walk and you have a free half day.

Guided trips solve it too. The valley walk starts and ends at its office at 20 Main Road, so your car stays in town, and the heli hikes and scenic flights all check in on the main street of Franz Josef or Fox. One thing not to do: park on the verge of the access road to dodge the fee. DOC has put a compliance ranger on exactly that.

The other big walks in the area, Lake Matheson and the Fox Glacier South Side Walkway, are not among DOC's paid sites. Our valley walk guide has the route in detail.
