The Franz Josef valley walk

A local guide takes ten people at most up the Franz Josef valley, half on the public track and half on side trails you can't walk alone, with a hot drink by the river. It ends at the public viewpoint, about 3 km from the ice: you see the glacier, you don't touch it.

Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk

About this experience

Glacier Valley Eco Tours runs this from its office in The Helicopter Line building at 20 Main Road, next to Glacier Motors. Check-in is 9:15am, the group leaves at 9:30am, and you're back by 12:30pm. The guide lends raincoats, over-trousers, big umbrellas and poles, plus boots if your shoes won't do. Then it's into the valley: old podocarp rainforest, the glacial river, a kettle lake, and the story of the glacier, its rocks and its plants.

Be clear about what this is. The operator says it plainly: "we cannot get any closer to the glacier than the public viewpoint". That viewpoint, at the end of DOC's Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere Walk, sits about 3 km from the terminal face, and DOC says the river has cut off access further up. One guest put it simply: good views, "but it was quite a long way off". What you pay for is the guide and the side trails. About half the walk is public track; the rest uses trails only a guide may take, and even those depend on the group and on recent rain.

The DOC track itself is free: 1.7 km return, about 30 minutes from the car park at the end of Glacier Access Road (paid parking since December 2025: NZ$2.50 per half hour, card only). If you want the view and nothing more, walk it yourself; our valley walk guide covers it. If you'd like to understand what you're looking at and get off the main path, NZ$115 direct on its own website is fair. To get onto the ice you need the heli hike.

  • Groups of 10 at most with a local guide
  • Side trails off the public track, at the guide's call
  • Hot drinks and biscuits on the walk
  • Rain gear, umbrellas, poles and boots on loan
  • Kids from 4; baby carriers available
  • Morning slot: back in town by 12:30pm

What guests say

★★★★★

Our guide Tyler was knowledgeable and took great care to make sure everyone in our group was comfortable with the terrain. There were a few places that people with mobility issues would struggle, but most of the route was easy. Stopped for a hot drink on the river bed with a cookie. Had good views of the glacier but it was quite a long way off.

★★★★★

This was an excellent, intimate tour of some beautiful trails you can’t access as an individual. Our guide was really knowledgeable about the area and wildlife, and the tea and biscuits half way through was a nice surprise!

Ivy · Nov 2024
★★★★★

Rain on the day wasn’t an issue as the company was completely prepared with wet weather clothes so we could return as dry as we left. [...] Despite cloud cover meaning that we didn’t catch a glimpse of the glacier, we found it a great way to spend the morning

Booking was easy and upon arrival they checked I had the right gear for the terrain and lent me a robust pair of walking boots, as my walking shoes weren’t right. [...] We explored areas of Franz Josef Glacier that you would not get to see if you were self directed

Tips before you book

  • It runs in the rain. Take the loan gear: guests came back dry after a wet morning.
  • Low cloud can hide the glacier completely. If the view is all you care about, go on a clear morning.
  • Off-track sections are at the guide's discretion and not guaranteed, especially after heavy rain.
  • Want another look later? Sentinel Rock (20 minutes return) starts from the same car park. See our parking fees post before you drive up.
  • Bring water and a snack: lunch and water aren't included.
