Weather and cancellations

The West Coast is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, and helicopters need clear air. Plenty of heli hikes don't fly. Here is how to plan so yours does, and what happens to your money if it doesn't.

Nobody publishes a cancellation rate for the glacier heli hikes, and we won't invent one. What we have are the operators' rules, the listing terms and hundreds of guest reviews that mention the weather. They tell a consistent story: cancellations are common, they come at short notice, and the people who get on the ice are the ones who leave themselves a second chance.

Rain here is measured in metres. DOC gives up to 5 m a year for the park; Franz Josef Glacier Guides says 6 to 8 m on the glaciers.

The quick answer

No operator publishes a cancellation rate. Guests report runs of cancelled days, and one was told the chance of flying was "maybe 1 in 3" in poor spells. If the operator cancels, you get a full refund or a new time; you can also cancel free on Viator up to 24 hours before. There is no refund if you turn up unfit. Book your first morning in the area, take the earliest slot, stay two nights, and keep a rain plan.

How often are heli hikes cancelled for weather?

Often enough to plan around. There is no official figure, but guest reports describe whole runs of cancelled days, and one guest was told the odds were "maybe 1 in 3".

From the Franz Josef heli hike reviews on Viator, 2025-26:

  • "The experience was cancelled the previous 6 days before our booking but we seemed to have picked a perfect day for it" (July 2026).
  • "sunny, calm & perfect, and sandwiched between two days of cancellations!" (February 2026).
  • "We have been told that the chances of going up are maybe 1 in 3 but that is the beauty of alpine regions." That guest didn't fly and was refunded within a day (November 2025).
  • "We luckily stayed for two nights so when our first flight was cancelled due to weather, we were rebooked the next morning" (November 2025).

Read those as weather, not as a rate: a clear week flies almost every slot, a wet week almost none. Franz Josef Glacier Guides' own advice, on its FAQ, is to build flexibility into your plans, because "an extra day gives you the best chance."

What weather stops the helicopters?

Heavy rain, strong wind and low cloud. The operator also needs a clear window long enough to fly everyone up and bring them all back.

Franz Josef Glacier Guides names heavy rain, high winds and low cloud as the three things that ground its helicopters. Once a group is on the ice, the pilot must be able to collect it, so the sky has to stay open for the length of the trip, around four hours. A clear morning with cloud forecast for 11am can mean the 7:30 flies and the 10:00 doesn't.

Cloud can also cut a trip short. One guest's hike was ended early by incoming weather, with a partial refund; another got a shorter glacier encounter instead of the full hike and was offered the next day. Snow-landing flights face the same rules: a Glacier Helicopters guest had a flight "cut short with no landing due to poor conditions."

Who makes the weather call, and when?

The operator, on the morning of the trip. Fox Glacier Guiding makes its final call 10 minutes before check-in; Franz Josef Glacier Guides also decides on the day.

The Fox heli hike listing says "a weather call is made 10 minutes prior to check in so flexibility in your itinerary is desirable"; Fox Glacier Guiding's FAQ puts the final decision 10 minutes before departure. Franz Josef Glacier Guides publishes no fixed time for its call, so expect to hear on the morning. Keep your phone on and go to check-in unless told otherwise.

Guests describe calls made at short notice in both directions. A Franz Josef guest praised the company as "very honest about potential weather cancellations"; another wished they had known a trip "can be cancelled at a moments notice." Now you do.

Do you get a refund if the heli hike is cancelled?

Yes. If the operator cancels for weather you get a full refund or a new time. If you cancel yourself, it is free up to 24 hours before on Viator.

  • Operator cancels for weather: full refund or a reschedule, subject to space (Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Fox Glacier Guiding). Franz Josef may also offer a glacier landing instead.
  • Trip cut short by weather: guests report a partial refund.
  • You cancel 24 hours or more ahead: free on every Viator listing on this site.
  • You cancel within 24 hours: no refund on Viator; Fox Glacier Guiding charges 100% when booked direct.
  • You can't keep up on the day: no refund. The Franz Josef listing says refunds "will not be available for clients who cannot participate on the day due to inappropriate fitness levels."

Refunds through Viator go back to your card; one guest had theirs "in less than 24hrs". Travel insurance rarely adds anything here, since weather cancellations are already refunded.

How should you plan around the weather?

Book the first morning slot on your first full day, stay at least two nights, and keep the second morning free to rebook.

Guests say it over and over. "Book an early time slot for less risk of clouds that can cause cancellations." And at Fox: "We booked early in the day & the weather was clear, with clouds starting later in the day. From our two days in the area, I would definitely book the earliest session." Cloud tends to build over the Alps as the day warms.

  • Slot: 7:30am at Franz Josef in summer, 8:50am at Fox.
  • Nights: two at least. Three if the heli hike is the reason you came.
  • Order: heli hike first, free walks and kayak after. The walks run in the rain; the helicopter doesn't.
  • Both glaciers: if you can't get on one, ask about the other. They are 25 km apart, but the same storm usually covers both.

Is winter or summer better for the weather?

Winter (June to August) often brings calmer, clearer days, say the operators; summer brings long days, more departures and full helicopters. It rains in every month.

Franz Josef Glacier Guides writes that "Winter weather in Franz Josef can be surprisingly calm, with clear, crisp days perfect for scenic flights" (FJGG). The trade-off is short days, fewer departures and cold on the ice: about -5 to +10 °C in winter against +5 to +15 °C in summer, by the operators' figures.

Summer, December to February, is busiest. More slots means more chances to rebook, but also more people chasing the same seats after a wet day. Spring and autumn sit in between. Whatever the month, the early slot and a spare day matter more than the season.

What can you do if your heli hike is cancelled?

Walk the valley, paddle Lake Mapourika or sit in the hot pools. All three work in the rain.

  • The free valley walk: 30 minutes to the viewpoint, waterfalls at full power after rain. Check the track is open first. See the valley walk guide.
  • The guided valley walk: Glacier Valley Eco Tours runs in most weather and lends raincoats, over-trousers and umbrellas.
  • Kayak: the Lake Mapourika kayak tour runs in light rain, and the lake is often calmest then. A guest wrote that in the rain "the water is warmer and as we reached the mirror river, things began to clear up".
  • Hot pools: Glacier Hot Pools in the village, about NZ$29 for adults.
  • Lake Matheson: if the cloud lifts by late afternoon, drive to Fox for the reflection walk. See Fox Glacier walks.

What if the weather cancels it on your last day?

Take the refund, then look at a snow-landing flight later the same day, or a trip from Queenstown if you are heading that way.

Snow-landing flights are short, 20 to 25 minutes, so they can slip into a gap in the cloud that a 4-hour heli hike can't. Guests report flights moved to a later slot the same day when the weather improved. The 20-minute private flight and the 25-minute flight both run from Main Road.

Heading south? The Queenstown heli hike day flies from Queenstown to the glacier and back, and guests report it switching between glaciers to find clear weather. It is $1,250, but it gives you one more roll of the dice.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Franz Josef heli hikes are cancelled?

No operator publishes one. Guest reviews describe cancelled runs of several days and clear spells where every slot flies. Plan for at least one cancelled morning.

Do I get my money back if the heli hike is cancelled for weather?

Yes. The operator offers a full refund or a new time, and through Viator the refund goes back to your card. If you cancel yourself, do it 24 hours or more before to get your money back.

What time of day is best for a heli hike?

The first departure. Cloud tends to build over the Alps through the day, and guests repeatedly recommend the earliest slot: 7:30am at Franz Josef in summer, 8:50am at Fox.

Do heli hikes run in the rain?

Not in heavy rain, strong wind or low cloud. In light drizzle with a clear valley they can fly. You hear on the morning, at Fox 10 minutes before check-in.
